So you want to own a vineyard in Bulgaria?
BEFORE YOU BEGIN
- Get to know your market and where you want to sell before you start making wine. Be sure that you are making a product that people want to drink. And of course get some knowledge as to how to make wine - unless it is your intention to hire a winemaker from Bulgaria.
- You should be looking at it more as a lifestyle rather than as a way to make large amounts of money.
WHAT WILL IT COST?
- It will cost about 10,000 EURO per planted hectare, and that won't include any property in Bulgaria you want for living in. That would be for some decent varieties.
- A small domaine would be 10 hectares - and again that's just for the vineyards. You also have to think of your cave and how would want to fit that out. That could cost easily 30,000 EURO.
- Depending on the size of the size of the Bulgarian property, you really need to start off with a minimum of half a million euros. That would would include a small- to medium- sized property in Bulgaria, a few currently producing hectares, and a kitten-out cave. It costs a lot of money to produce wine, but it,s far more expensive if you Chateauneuf-du-Pape!
