According to the legend, Agatha, a Greek goddess of love, liked the surroundings of this small town about 90 km south of Burgas so much that she made it her summer rest home. She named it Agathopolis, City of Love. Thousands of Bulgarians come here for the sea, beautiful beaches and relative lack of organized tourism during their summer holidays. And because Sozopol, in the past a hangout of artists and intellectuals, has now become expensive and overpopulated, many of them call the ancient City of Love “The New Sozopol”.
This town’s real attraction, however, comes in late September, with the annual passage of what may be the Black Sea’s tastiest fish, the bonito. Very different in size ad shape from the standard Atlantic fare, the Black Sea bonito, or palamud, is best enjoyed grilled, with plenty of lemon and a few raw onions to add spice. Thanks to the generous helpings, The New Sozopol is easily becoming the Bonito Capital of Europe.
