Nessebar became a UNESCO World Heritage Site. UNESCO statistics say that 150,000 people visited the city and bought tickets to its attractions in 2004.
The appearance of British tourists, then, actually represents a return to an older version of Bulgaria’s arguably most beautiful coastal location. They signify globalisation, cosmopolitanism and international trade, all of which are elements of Nessebar’s identity far more than the process of “museumification” that seems to have been imposed on the town during the second half of the last century.
One of the questions facing Nessebar and Bulgaria as a whole now, however, is the kind of globalisation that will affect the town and country. A quick Internet search on popular UK sites like Lastminute.com yields seven-day trips from Gatwick to Burgas Airport, which is less than an hour’s drive from Nessebar, for around £400 per person. That’s not an expensive trip.
