30% VISITORS INCREASE IN THE SPA CAPITAL OF BULGARIA DURING THE PAST YEAR
Russian investors in Bulgaria are considering a project for new charter airport and adjacent casino in Velingrad. The Russians are intrigued by the local Municipality’s project due to the gambling ban in Russia as of 1st July. Despite the fact that the idea is not finished in details there is an increasing interest by business people, the Mayor has said. Passionate gamblers do not want to waste time traveling – the concept is “from-the-plane-to-the-gambling-tables”. Even though the total increase of tourists in Bulgaria is 30% for the past year, weekday visits are still at a very low rate. Half a million foreign tourists choose Velingrad for their holiday in Bulgaria in 2008. Prices stayed stable and have not risen though, as locals expect and hope for numbers to stay same. “For the World Financial crisis we have only heard from the news!” says Zlatanov.
Velingrad was announced “SPA centre of the Balkans” by the Balkan Alliance of the Hotel Associations. The town offers accommodation for 4000 tourists. There is a stipulation for further two 5 star hotels and 4 four star hotels to be built by the end of 2009.
