New standards for spa and wellness tourism
In the new prepared Law for tourism will be defined specific criteria that hotels must meet to be registered as a spa, wellness and balneological centers. Now there is no such criteria, and many hotels are called "spa" without actually being such as the European requirements. Furthermore, in the segments themselves - spa, wellness and balneology - will set the criteria for categorization, possibly with stars as the hotels. Also it is discussed what requirements must be fulfilled by a resort to be determined in general as a spa destination.
Velingrad and Hissar for example are now very close to the definition of a spa destination.
Minister of Economy, Energy and Tourism Traicho Traykov said also that spa tourism is the fastest growing tourist sector in Bulgaria.
He noted that the EC is preparing a directive according to which insured persons in the European Community to whom is recommended medical spa treatment, will be able to attend appropriate wellness centers across the whole EU. This will also help to be developed this type of tourism in Bulgaria.
It is proposed in the new Tourism Law part of the tourist taxes collected at the moment, not to go to the respective municipality, but to the Government. The reason for this is that municipalities do not always use them in the right direction, which is advertising the local tourism and improvement of the infrastructure.
