Mass tourism is a double-edge sword for the locals

The new Bulgaria is on display in Sozopol, where old timers are stunned to see how their sleepy village has ballooned into a full-blown international tourist destination.
This transformation may be cause for celebration or sorrow. But, either way, it underlines the much-vaunted popularity of one of Bulgaria’s most beautiful and oldest cities.
Around 30 hotels have been built in the last few years in Sozopol, according to a non-scientific poll of internet sites devoted to the region’s tourism. They range from three-star hotels to humble, one-star establishments. And this excludes private apartments locals rent out for the summer as well as mammoth luxury resorts outside the town centre.
Depending on the time of the year, Sozopol’s hotels can cost either 50 leva or over 100 euros a night. Take special care in September, when Sozopol stages the week-long Apollonia Festival of the Arts, attracting visual artists, musicians, poets and dancers. Finding a room at that time is difficult.
