Burgas is the biggest and most important economic, administrative and cultural center on the south part of the Black sea coast. This is the second biggest city on the coastline, after Varna, and fourth in the country, after Sofia, Plovdiv and Varna. It possesses a favorable geographical position who’s potential is mostly used. The city is situated along the biggest Bulgarian gulf “Burgas gulf” which is deeply indented inland and provides prime conditions for shipping.
Burgas is neighbouring “Atanasovsko lake” in north, “Mandrensko lake” in south-west and in west - Burgas lake and the preservation area “Vaya” famous for attracting many kinds of rare birds. Burgas’ sea level is between 2 to 27 meters and is the Port for the whole south Bulgaria.
The city of Burgas is 385 km distance from the capital Sofia, 267km from the second biggest city Plovdiv and 133km from Varna.
The population of Burgas has changed dramatically throughout the years. It was formed in 1844 as a fishermen’s village with 2000 inhabitants. In 1887 they were 5864, in 1900 – 11738. In 1920 the population doubled and numbered over 21000 citizens. Today there are around 350000 people living in the city with a growing number of migrants poring in.
Burgas port has developed as a modern one with wide specialization – for petroleum, coal, fertilizers, fish, metal and machinery. 60% of the country’s sea commodity circulation is carried out through this point. The port offers 80 ship spaces and is the main port for south Bulgaria and Sofia.
Burgas airport is situated 10km north-east of the city with the potential for handling passengers and cargo having strong effect on the development of a transport network, tourism and trade, providing for intermodal transportation by air, sea and land. The airport handles scheduled and charter flights from all over the world 24hours a day making it the busiest airport in the country during the summer season.
Among the tourist attractions of Burgas are: the county Historical museum with rich collections from the old Black sea colonies, pottery, coins, jewelry, grave stones and of course new history displays. The Art gallery offers exhibition rooms for foreign art, Bulgarian painting and icons. A variety of churches represents the local history of the Christianity, with the biggest one being the “St.Cyril and Methodias” cathedral. The Ethnographic museum, set in a 1873 listed house, has a wide exhibition of traditional mummer’s masks as well as typical for the region outfits and costumes, every day and ritual attributes. The Natural Science museum holds presents the geological specifications of the region excibiting over 1200 exponents. The Philharmonic association, the Opera and the Drama theater give the cultural aspect of Burgas. The city hosts numerous festivals and celebrations throughout the year providing a bit of excitement for every visitor.
The Sea garden in Burgas is set high above the beach offering cool relaxing areas, children’s playgrounds, adult open-air fitness area, numerous monuments and statues, the open air Summer theater (venue to many concerts and art performances every summer), and incredible 180° sea views.
The beach is situated below the Sea garden. Its central area is approached thorough few branched staircases and is known for its sand which differs in colour depending on the amount of lodestone concentration. The North beach is famous for the mineral healing black mud used free as a natural spa source by many tourists.
TheBurgas’s Mineral baths are just 13km north-west set on the grounds of the ancient roman town of Aetos, with few Spa centers. A unique tourist attraction is the St.Anastasia island with an ancient church within it, used as an exile place during the communist years.
Burgas is the “crossroad” connecting North to South and inland to the sea. Towns ofinterest around Burgas are Pomorie (20km) with its salt lakes and mud Spa centers, Nesebar (37km) with amazing archeological “old part” and Sozopol (31km) with unique archeological excavation spots and rocky bay. Burgas is the connecting point to the Stranja mountain – a paradise for rare species of the Flora and Fauna, hunting and fishing areas, and Malko Tarnovo – the border crossing point connecting with Turkey.
